AUSTRALIA’S LONGEST RIVERS
:
Australia has a vast network of flowing (and sometimes dry) river systems throughout our vast continent. NSW boasts the four longest, from the mighty Murray with an approx. length of 2 520 kms (1 560 miles) to the Murrumbidgee 1 575 kms (979 miles) to the Darling 1 390 kms (864 miles)

Other major Australian rivers include the Lachlan 1 370 kms (851 miles), the Flinders (Qld) 840 kms (522 miles) the Gascoyne (WA) 760 kms (472 miles) and the Goulburn (Vic) 566 kms (352 miles).

The longest continuous river system is the Murray-Darling (Qld-NSW-South Australia) with a total length of 3 370 kms (2 094 miles).

AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST LAKES AND RESERVOIRS:
Unfortunately Australia is not well endowed with natural lakes containing vast supplies of water, therefore our great need for the construction of dams.

Our largest lake (salt) is Lake Eyre in South Australia with an area of 9 500 sq. kms, Lake Mackay (3 494) in Western Australia to the man-made Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra (7.2).

As for constructed reservoirs, held back by dams, supplying water and power supply needs, the largest capacity is held within Lake Gordon in Tasmania. Lake Eucumbene, located within the Snowy Mountain Scheme also rates very highly

AUSTRALIA’S TALLEST WATERFALLS:
These are founds on rivers forming co-ordinated drainage systems and although their catchment areas are small, their high volume flows have resulted in deep gorges producing spectacular waterfalls.

The Wallaman Falls in Qld are 305 m (1 000 ft), the Wollombombi in NSW are 220 m (722 ft) with 100 m (328 ft) as a single drop and the Ellenborough Falls also in NSW are 160 m (525 ft) which is regarded as Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfall.

Other:
We also have countless seas, channels, tributaries, brooks and creeks.  Water is the lifeblood of this country, however safety concerns must also be adhered to and mentioned here particularly concerning boating.

As with the rules of the road, water rules are essential in promoting safety and enjoyment. When on the water, you must always keep a good look out and be ready to give way to other vessels.  Generally, power boats must keep out of the way of sailing and fishing boats or other boats that are slowed down by dredging, laying of cables etc. You must always keep on the right side of the channels.  The golden rule is “look to the right, give way to the right, turn to the right and stay to the right”.

Safe boating saves lives and as studies have shown, 75% of drownings could be avoided by the wearing of life jackets; 90% of fatal accidents and 88% of non-fatal accidents occur to poor skipper knowledge and almost 80% of vessels have inadequate safety equipment.

Rescue and emergency operations are carried out by the State’s Water Police, highly trained Coast Guard volunteers and the Sea Rescue Squadron.

Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme -
Australia has almost 500 large dams all over the country.  16 of them are found within the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme which was the largest engineering project ever undertaken in Australia. It began construction in 1949 and was completed a quarter of a century later in 1974 at a cost of A$820 million. Additionally, it is one of the largest and most complex hydro-electric schemes in the world.

This feat of engineering really ‘put Australia on the map’ and was a sign of the country’s identity as an independent, resourceful and multicultural nation.  Over 100 000 people originating from more than 30 countries worked on the project which made up 70% of the workforce.

It supplies vital water to the farming communities of inland NSW and Victoria and its power stations produce about 10% of the state’s energy requirements.

The scheme, situated within the Kosciuszko National Park in south-eastern NSW, covers an area of over 5 000 sq. kms and only 2% is visible above the ground.  There are 7 power stations and 225 kms of tunnels and pipelines.
