Other Sports On Or Around Water

Skurfing, first practiced in Australia is a popular surface water sport where one is towed on a surfboard, behind a boat, with a ski rope. It is more about a personal and individual style and therefore has no real rules or regulations about it. Western Australia has particularly adopted this fun sport as its own.

Wake Boarding came about from combining snow boarding, water skiing and surfing methods. The boards are shorter and wider than snowboards and are convex in style. Average speeds are between 26-27 kilometres per hour (16-23 mp) with beginners starting at 29 kph (18mph) using shorter ropes and expert boarders reaching up to 40 kph (25mph) with ropes up to 24 metres long (80 ft).

Tubing or biscuiting requires little skill, but is great fun.  A large round rubber tube is towed behind a fast speed boat and the idea is to hold on as long as possible.  This is not always easy as the boat makes a lot of sharp turns.  More experienced ‘biscuiters’ also attempt to jump the wake of the boat and ‘take flight’!

Discing also involves towing, this time on a round wooden disc, which evenly supports the rider’s weight across the water.  It does take good balance and therefore can’t be experienced at very high speeds.  To add a touch of excitement to this sport, some ‘discers’ try to hold on as long as possible while doing circles at high speeds and then see how far they can ‘shoot off’ after letting go of the rope.

Kite Surfing entails using a power kite to pull a small surfboard or wakeboard.  It is also sometimes known as kiteboarding or flysurfing.

Body Boarding uses a small, hydrodynamically shaped piece of foam to mainly lie down or ‘prone’ on.  The ‘dropknee’ position means it is ridden half standing or can even be ridden standing up.  Swimming fins or flippers help the bodyboarders with paddling out and starting off.

Dragon Boating involves paddling very long and narrow boats and originates from China. For the famous Dragon Boat Races the boats are decorated with Chinese dragon heads and tails and carry a large drum on board. The paddlers sit, crouch or stand in the direction they are moving and the paddles are not fixed to the boat

Outrigger Canoeing
is becoming increasingly popular and the canoe is so named as it features one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers.  These are attached to one or both sides of the main hull and provide much greater stability and therefore safety than a canoe.  Smaller canoes usually use a single outrigger whilst the larger ones use a double outrigger setup.
